In June 2021, WhatsApp found itself in the middle of unprecedented controversy. The terms of service and privacy policy for WhatsApp messages updated,
which requires users to share certain personal data with Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp.
The app indicated that users were forced to accept this new policy before the deadline or risk losing access to the app. Finally, WhatsApp had to reconsider its position in the face of the protest of several European regulators. According to them, this new policy is a violation of the GDPR.
Almost a year later, it is clear that Brussels has not finished this file,
as the European Commission sent a new letter to the courier service. In this letter, you request detailed explanations about the use of data collected by the company. Additionally, the political establishment wants to know how WhatsApp plans to communicate future updates to its terms of service.
In addition, European consumer law requires that users are informed of the effects of these updates and can freely choose if they still wish to use the app.
“WhatsApp must ensure that users understand what they accept and how their personal data is used for commercial purposes,” said Didier Reynders,
commissioner for justice within the commission.
